Welcome to Ginger with Roots!

I’m Dana, the Ginger with Roots who planted herself in South Carolina with her husband-Bob, their three daughters, three labradoodles, and a few chickens. I believe that when life knocks you down, dig in the dirt!

Ginger with Roots is a place for curious home gardeners, seasonal cooks, and anyone who finds joy in slowing down and living a little closer to the earth.

Here, you’ll find practical guidance paired with inspiration because growing and cooking shouldn’t feel intimidating or perfect. It should feel doable, nourishing, and deeply satisfying.

I also share all of my favorite resources and tools for putting down roots. The only gatekeeping here is the one to keep the deer out of my garden!

Why Ginger with Roots?

The name reflects both my personality as a redhead and my philosophy toward life.

“Ginger” represents warmth, curiosity, and a little spark. “Roots” speaks to grounding, honoring traditions, nature, and the simple joys of homegrown living.

I believe you don’t need acres of land or endless free time to live seasonally. You just need a willingness to start where you are and grow from there.

How did I get here?

As a former teacher, I believe in the value of sharing knowledge and encouraging others to learn. While I am not in a brick and mortar classroom anymore, I am still in the business of helping others improve and succeed.

Over the years, I’ve worn the hats of teacher, homemaker, gardener, and writer. Each has shaped the way I approach this space: with patience, encouragement, and a deep respect for the process.

I don’t believe in doing things perfectly. I believe in doing them thoughtfully.

“Might I,” quavered Mary, “might I have a bit of earth?” “Earth!” he repeated. “What do you mean?” “To plant seeds in — to make things grow — to see them come alive.”

— Frances H. Burnett, The Secret Garden

During the pandemic, my husband and I built the enclosed kitchen garden. Like so many others, this moment in history became a turning point in my life. With more time at home and fewer outside distractions, I gardened, harvested, cooked and shared my experiences with friends and family. When my eldest suggested starting a blog, I was intrigued. Several years later, Ginger with Roots has reached thousands of readers and inspired people from all over the world.

That’s a classroom I never expected to have!
