summer grilled okra

When the summer bounty of okra starts rolling in from the garden, this recipe is number one on my list. It’s fast, simple and tastes amazing.

My brother, David, and his wife, Emily, have been making grilled okra for years and when I asked him the recipe-I was shocked to learn it only had three ingredients.

Seeing as okra is one of the easiest plants to grow in the summer garden, it makes that we should have one of the easiest recipes to prepare it!

If you’re new to growing okra, read my post Growing Okra: A Garden to Table Guide for Fresh Summer Cooking. It really is one of the easiest plants to grow in the kitchen garden and it produces so much food! Plus the okra plant has these beautiful ‘hibiscus’ style blossoms that are gorgeous.

How Do You Prepare Summer Grilled Okra?

Choose okra pods that are about the size of your thumb; really big okra can be more fibrous and chewy. I save those in the freezer for Brunswick Stew in the fall-yum!

Wash and dry your okra pods completely and trim off the woody stem and pointy tip.

Put the okra in a big bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle coarse kosher salt all over them and toss them around together to coat evenly.

Ready to Grill Some Okra?

Fire up that grill to medium high heat and have some tongs ready. Place the seasoned okra across the grill grates and grill for 3-4 minutes. Carefully rotate the pods every couple of minutes to cook evenly and get some nice grill marks on them.

Alternatively, you can use a grill pan or grilling fish basket to keep them from falling through the grates.

Once they are done, remove the grilled okra and serve immediately. These are good enough to eat on their own, but you can also make a dipping sauce if you wish. Ranch dressing, remoulade or spicy mayo would be delicious!
